If that worked, they would be perfect for backup phones lines to a small business phone system as well as home personal use. You do have to remember to dial #, but that wasn't hard to deal with. We connected them to our phone system and they worked well. This meant that we couldn't call voice mail systems or allow incoming calls to go to our internal voice mail system. The Skytone Gateway product works well. We setup four of these on four spare computers when we were moving one of our offices and couldn't immediately get the phone service we wanted, but we did have Internet access. The only thing we discovered as a problem was that they do not pass DTMF tones, although Skype is supposed to according to a recent article I read, so it must be the Skytone device that is preventing DTMF.
It works well with a hard wired phone, but did not with a wireless but this is likely not the fault of the link. The Skype link device works as advertised and was easy to set up. The problem is with SKYPE that insists on sending me quality of call question forms that cause my computer to freeze when they stack up.
However, you should really connect it to a USB hub that receives its own power and not into a USB port on your computer. This product performed as advertised. You also want to be sure and install skype before the Skytone driver (the CD that comes with this devise).
Overall it does not really anoying for us. I do not recommend ITP. With such a configuration it means that when someone skype talk or skype telephone you, you will have to answer through the telephone unless you quickly change the configuration to answer through your PC. That is very cool.
I do not think this is a gateway limitation but more likely a Skype or Windows one. So overall, excluding the internet connection, having a line with Skype is $90/year. It has only one phone jack but I have cordless phones linked to a single base so I can answer my call from everywhere in the house. I can live with few inconvients at that price. Configuration of the unit is quite simple after the software installation. It answers call from the land line and the Skype line through the same telephone.
We only use Skype for outgoing calls; this gateway requires to suffix the # sign to the phone number so it knows that it must send this call through Skype instead of the land line. Skype requires configuration too in order to redirect the sound to the gateway/usb port instead of the headset or speaker. All this said means that someone can skype-to-skype you (not calling your Skype telephone line) and it will ring on your telephone or your cell/other phone that you configure in your Skype account has follow up/reach me phone number. My previous VOIP ITP provider costed me $200 for bad service, double billing issues (they never have been able to recognize all their mistakes so receive only partial refund), fights and down time (6 days: account desactivated no reason provided). This product works very well. We get use to it.
So you become reacheable by phone through free skype account.
